An Edible Centerpiece for Thanksgiving

There are so many things that go into a bountiful Turkey Day.  In the midst of all the prepping, brining and basting, don’t forget to carve out a little time to add a few finishing touches to the table that will highlight all your efforts.  As friends and family gather, a stunning centerpiece can set the tone for your decor.   Need a little inspiration?  Look no further than the produce section at the grocery store (or your refrigerator!) for this year’s centerpiece “ingredients”.  There are so many exquisite root vegetables, fruits, berries, mushrooms and leafy greens this time of year that come together beautifully to create a structural, dynamic arrangement.

Here are a few of my tricks:

Choose a color or palette to begin.  This year, I was inspired by the purples and browns in bosc pears, shitake mushrooms and ginger.

Exploring texture can also be a lot of fun.  For example with the color purple, you have the high gloss skin of an eggplant contrasting with tight bobbles of blackberries and ruffly edges of a winter lettuce.

The vase or container you choose to host the centerpiece can also influence your choices and add interest.

Beyond the grocery store, your refrigerator or winter garden can also be a great source of ingredients and inspiration.

Herbs are a beautiful addition to an arrangement and can bring welcomed fragrance to your table, too.

Confession: I first began making edible arrangements one evening when I was in desperate need of a finishing touch before the guests arrived.  With no conventional flowers in sight, I realized I was standing in a kitchen full of beautiful ingredients that would love an extra moment to shine.

Happy Thanksgiving!
