Spring on Our Steps
Nothing says “Spring!” like colorful blossoms. Max, Charlotte and I took a trip to the nursery and left with inspiration and a trunk full of annuals. Isn’t it amazing how a little bit of color on the front steps can inspire your arrival and departure? Here are a few of our favorites with some useful care information to get you started:
Pansies: When I think of spring annuals, pansies are usually what come first to mind. Low growing, these are a great filler plant or on their own in a low, wide container. Pansies like cooler weather as their color will start to fade as the temperature climbs. They like sun to partial shade and moist, moderately fertilized soil.
Lobelia: Deer resistant and delicate, this flower is beautiful on its own or in window boxes or containers. Lobelia requires partial sun and well drained soil and will be most happy as temperatures begin to climb. Best yet, butterflies are also fond of lobelia!
Petunias: These are another signature warm weather flower for me. Petunias come in a huge array of colors which make it that much more fun when choosing your arrangement. Be sure to pinch back the faded or dead flowers to prolong the blooming time of the plant.
Gerbera Daisies: These are a great way to add color as well as a little height to your container garden. Gerbera Daisies like full to partial sun. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Wait until night temperatures are in the 50’s before planting outside.
